The Michelin Guide’s announcement also featured Southern Ocean Lodge among its editor’s picks, highlighting its modern architecture. Our coverage of the full Australian results sets out the wider selection.

A top tier of Australian lodges

Promoted alongside Southern Ocean Lodge, Saffire Freycinet rose from its 2025 award of Two Keys to Three Keys in 2026. Their fellow Three-Key hotel, Lizard Island Resort, held Three Keys in both 2025 and 2026.

Saffire Freycinet is an all-inclusive lodge on Tasmania’s east coast, where twenty suites overlook Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards Mountains. The shared promotion puts small coastal lodges at the centre of Australia’s gains.

Worldwide, 155 hotels hold Three Keys within a selection covering 2,832 properties across 79 destinations. Southern Ocean Lodge was among just 18 hotels to reach that level for the first time in 2026. That is a small company even within an awards selection.

Australia now has 54 hotels with Michelin Keys. Moving up a tier is the result that matters here.

The Keys programme first covered Australia, New Zealand and South America in 2025, while 2026 marked the second consecutive year that eight lodges in the Beckons collection received distinctions.

Recognition after the rebuild

Designed by island-born architect Max Pritchard, the original Southern Ocean Lodge opened in 2008 and was destroyed by bushfire in 2020. Rebuilding the lodge cost $55 million. That history gives the promotion unusual weight.

The rebuild added a wet-edge pool.

The lodge’s southern clifftop suites have ocean views through floor-to-ceiling glass, with dining included in the stay. Dinner changes daily, with four courses drawing on produce from Kangaroo Island and South Australia. The connection to the island extends well beyond the view.

Inside the entry-level Flinders Suite, a sunken lounge sits among limestone floors and blackwood feature walls, with commissioned artworks by South Australians. In the Remarkable Suite, guests have a private plunge pool and a fireplace made from limestone, alongside views across the Southern Ocean. Those materials give Michelin’s architectural praise something concrete to rest on.

The promotion gives Southern Ocean Lodge a new reference point beyond its recovery from fire. Retaining Three Keys is now the next test.
